The Gods of Ithilinor and Palanor

The Major Gods & Goddesses

Lady of the Moon

She is the Goddess/Guardian of the Vanorans and she is patient, wise, kind and promotes free will.  She will protect her Children, but not inhibit their freedom of will and it is this tendency that led to the length of life of Vanorans and their ability to more or less choose when to age and die––a trait that earned both the Lady of the Moon and her Children the envy and loathing of the Lord of the Mountains and the Lady of the Sea and their Children.  She also gifted her Firstborn Children with the ability to sense danger, which allowed them to decide whether to face it or flee.  Her Secondborn Children also have this gift, though it is much weaker, for which reason the Descendants of the Firstborn would rule Vanor.

By her Children, she is adored and worshipped, by the mixed-blooded races (all of whom are a cross of Vanoran and either the Children of the Mountains or the Sea), she is reverred despite the general attitude of disatisfaction.  The Suranorans and Aranorans love her, though their deepest loyalty lies with the Lord of the Sun while the Narokians and Yrangese respectfully fear and loathe her––that is, they want to love her, but believe she broke her promise to protect her Children.  The Haranorans (as they are called in Vanor) openly hate her, though even they admit she is wise.

She is the elder sister of the Lord of the Sun.  Her magic, by use of light, is that of touch and communication and though there are two “branches” of her magic, they are interwoven.  That is, both branches use the same techniques, so to speak.  They are Seeking (the ability to feel and follow the trail left by a person as they move) and Telepathy (the ability to speak over long distances and share thoughts, sights and experiences).

Lord of the Sun

He is the God/Guardian of the mixed-blood races (“Lonoren”, Suranoran/Aranoran).  While he did not create his own race as his sister, the Lady of the Moon, the Lord of the Mountains and the Lady of the Sea did, he claims the mixed-blood races as his own and protects them as he can.  He is not seen as being very wise, but with the kindest heart of the gods.  He believes in free will, though he does occasionally interfere to protect his people.  He is fun-loving and patient and very kind-hearted.  He is also young compared to the other gods.

In Vanor, he is looked upon favorably, as the loveable younger brother of “Hiranor”.  In Suranor and Yrang, he is well loved and worshipped equally or more than the Lady of the Moon (Suranor) or the Lord of the Mountains (Yrang).  In Narok, the Lord of the Mountains comes first, the the Lord of the Sun is loved and worshipped (a tendency that can be explained by the excessive presence or absence of the sun from summer to winter––he is therefore not seen as being quite so loveable, but rather more ambiguous and flighty).  He is little thought of in Harinen, except when the sun is either oppressively hot or absent for long periods.  In the “southern” countries of Palanor (Aranor, Aevanor and Tol Anar), he is loved and worshipped, though in Aevanor and Tol Anar, he is second to the Lady of the Moon (since the majority of the the population of both countries are Vanoran).  In Saeda, the “northern” country of Palanor, the Lord of the Sun is well-loved enough, though he does not receive nearly the attention the Lady of the Sea does.

He is the younger brother of the Lady of the Moon.  His magic is that of healing and light.  Those gifted with Sun magic can heal a wound simply by touch, by weaving healing light around the aflicted area.  Also, as a gift of the Moon, the Sun’s gifted can comminicate telepathically.

Lady of the Sea

She is the Goddess/Guardian of the Ranaedans and Saedese.  She is a very tempermental goddess, easy to anger.  Her rashness is a reason why her Children have such short lives… she was too quick to create them in retaliation against the Lady of the Moon and the Lord of the Mountains to spend the time and thought on her creation.  She is also fiercly protective of her Children, though she allows them much more freedom of will than the Lord of the Mountains.

She is not prevalent in Narok or Lomenor, though both subcontinents of Ithilinor know of her.  In those regions, she is usually only thought of when crossing a large body of water or when a span of time is bogged down beneath particularly nasty weather.  She is much more commonly worshipped in Harinen as she is closest with the Lord of the Mountains.  In Palanor, like in Ranaeda, Saedans adore her and worship her, though it is with more fear and wonder than those who pray to the Lady of the Moon or the Lord of the Sun have.  Aranorans, Aevanorans and Tol Anarans always show respect though she comes after the Lady of the Moon and the Lord of the Sun.

This tempermental Goddess has the magic of invisibility.

Lord of the Mountains

He is the God/Guardian of the Harinechs.  He is strong and willful and shrewdly intelligent, though not as wise as the Lady of the Moon.  He is vindictive, vicious, short-tempered and often cruel and unfair.  When creating his Children, he made them in his image and gave them the hatred he held for the Lady of the Mountains and her Children.  He is, essentially the negation of the Lady of the Moon.  Where she promotes free will, he takes it away.

In Harinen, he is adored and worshipped; massive temples are built in his honor.  In all of Lomenor, even in Yrang, he is feared.  However, Vanorans and Suranorans generally stay away from him while Yrangese (and Narokians) pray to him in hopes he will be appeased.  In Ranaeda and Saeda, he is respected, though not adored.  In the rest of Palanor, he is generally ignored, though the Southern Vanorans do keep him in the backs of their mind, vigilant of his nasty tendencies to persuade them away from the Lady of the Moon.

The Lord of the Mountains has a magic that suits his character: Persuasion.  It allows him to take away the decision making abilities of his prey and “persuade” them to do his bidding.  Those he choosed to gift with his magic are given the same ability (hence the birth of the “Lonoren”).

Lady of Fire

The Lady of Fire is the Goddess of Justice.  She does not claim any one race, but rather stands guard over the souls of the damned.  She is very wise and intelligent and fair.  She is also slow to anger, but when she reaches the breaking point, she is very dangerous.

She is respected in all cultures across the world and is the symbol of all the various justice courts.  Because of her tendency to be vicious to those who anger her, she is spoken of with much reverence and caution.

Her magic is that of truth.  Those gifted with her magic can sense if someone has commited a physical crime against another person (rape, abuse, murder) or is lying to them.  These special people are called the Truthfinders or Truthseekers.  They were less common in Harinen than in the rest of the world, however, because the Harinechs are less inclined to desire justice.
